Video Transcript

KRYSTEN PEEK: I’m Krysten Peek, here with Joe Mazzulla. We’re in Salt Lake City for All-Star Weekend. Joe, Coach, big news today. You just got promoted from interim head coach. And it’s now finalized, you’re head coach of the Boston Celtics and you got an extension. What was that news like to finally get that push and you didn’t have to wait till the end of the season?

JOE MAZZULLA: Yeah, just a blessing. I’m grateful for the Celtics to give me just kind of that support and give our staff that support, that regardless of what happens throughout, they believe in us. And so grateful to them, grateful to the players, just for the relationships they allow us to build with them. And they allow us to coach them, and their belief and trust in us. So I think it starts with the organization and the players.

KRYSTEN PEEK: How have you been able to have the off the court noise, and you guys are one of the best teams. You have the best record in the NBA. How have you guys been able to just move on from that and continue to have great success this late into the season?

JOE MAZZULLA: Yeah, I think it starts with the locker room. We have a bunch of guys that are experienced that have been in locker rooms have had successful seasons and not successful seasons. And so I think just the accumulation of all the experience of our players kind of drives the motivation and drives the focus. And they do a great job of handling that.

KRYSTEN PEEK: What sort of details, you talk about the small things that need to change for you guys to be a championship caliber team.

JOE MAZZULLA: I don’t know if it’s about changing as much as it’s about just not being comfortable and understanding that we can always find small areas to get better. And you have to constantly get better at the things you’re good at. You have to double down on your strengths. You have to find a couple of things that you’re not great at and work at those.

KRYSTEN PEEK: OK, say you guys are healthy the rest of the season, what do the Celtics look like going into the postseason? Do you think that you guys were the best team in the NBA right now?

JOE MAZZULLA: As long as we’re healthy, as long as we’re focused, as long as we maintain our habits, our details, our discipline, and our execution, I like our chances.
