Jessica Pegula hits out at ‘trash’ article challenging her tennis ‘dynamic’ as the daughter of billionaires after Wimbledon exit

Jessica Pegula once again lost in a Grand Slam quarterfinal this week, and she didn’t appreciate the suggestion that her wealthy upbringing is hindering her search for a first major title.

Since reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2021, Pegula has lost six consecutive times in the last eight, with the latest setback coming against this year’s eventual Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova.

And after that 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 loss for Pegula, The Times of London suggested that the 29-year-old – whose billionaire parents own the Bills – was lacking something based on the way she was brought up.

The headline of a piece claimed that ‘Jessica Pegula needs dynamic that family billions can’t buy,’ and the article went further.

‘She is surrounded by luxury, but no grand-slam trophies,’ it read.

‘Which begs the question of what drives her. Is it possible to be hungry for victory if defeat is not overly meaningful in terms of wealth? Pegula has her own skincare brand and launched a health food restaurant chain in 2016, which has since closed down.

Pegula responded to a screenshot of the headline on Twitter, saying ‘I’ll tell you what I won’t buy is this [trash] article [crying-laughing emoji].’

Pegula’s parents, Terry and Kim Pegula, also own the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

Forbes estimates Terry’s net worth as $6.7billion.

The Florida native did reach the doubles final of the French Open last year, and reached the last four this year in Paris and Australia on the doubles side.

Pegula led 4-1 in the third set on Tuesday against Vondrousova before eventually falling, and the Czech player beat Ons Jabeur on Sunday to win Wimbledon.
