Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys shine on day of mixed fortunes for US stars at Wimbledon… with Sofia Kenin among those to crash out at SW19
It was a day of mixed fortunes for American players at Wimbledon on Friday, as seeds Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys breezed into the next round of the Championships but several compatriots crashed out.
Pegula, the No 4 seed whose parents own the Buffalo Bills, reached round four with a straight-sets win over Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, taking just one hour 15 minutes to win 6-4 6-0 on No 3 Court.
Keys needed only five minutes more to come through her second-round match against Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, winning 7-5 6-3.
Both women will now face Ukrainian opposition, with Pegula taking on Lesia Tsurenko and Keys drawn against world No 36 Marta Kostyuk.
In the men’s draw, Christopher Eubanks produced a fine upset on No 1 Court, beating British No 1 Cam Norrie in four sets.

Eubanks overcame the No 12 seed 6-3 3-6 6-2 7-6 to set up a third-round clash with Christopher O’Connell of Australia.
The Atlanta native could face fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in round four.
There were, however, several US casualties at SW19 on Friday. Sofia Kenin, who beat compatriot Coco Gauff in round one, was beaten in straight sets (7-6 6-2) by Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian who ended Venus Williams’ Championships on Monday.

Madison Brengle was also beaten after a marathon clash with Russia’s No 21 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. After three tiebreaks and nearly three hours, Brengle succumbed 6-7 7-6 7-6.
Meanwhile, Marcos Giron’s Championships are over after he lost 7-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 to Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.
There was also disappointment in the men’s doubles, with Rajeev Ram and his British partner Joe Salisbury – the No 3 seeds – losing in three sets to Dutch pair Tallon Griekspoor and Bart Stevens.
