On Christmas Eve, the broadcaster shocked his Twitter followers after a photo of pigs in blankets uploaded to the platform showed manhood wrapped in bacon.

The 67-year-old seemingly posted the image from his account with the caption of: ‘Love cooking Xmas dinner, I always do it in the buff!’

It didn’t take long for the Hartlepool United fan to reply to his own tweet blaming his sons Robbie and Matt for his previous post just 16 minutes earlier in the evening.

He replied: ‘My bloody sons. All their presents going back ! All Robbie will get is a Darlo shirt and Matt a ticket to a Palace game. FFS!!’

And, returning to the screen for the first time since the embarrassing ordeal, Stelling was happy to be the butt of the joke when he opened Sky Sports’ Boxing Day Soccer Special ahead of a big day of football.

‘Hello, a very good afternoon to you and welcome to this Boxing Day Soccer Special. A very merry Christmas to you, I do hope you had a wonderful Christmas, I certainly did…maybe one pig in blanket too many.’

That comment left Paul Merson, Clinton Morrison, Lee Hendrie, Michael Dawson and Sue Smith in hysterics, before Stelling added:  ‘We won’t be mentioning that again.’

Stelling has been a staple presence on Sky’s flagship Saturday football show for 30 years and plans to remain for some time, having briefly planned an exit earlier this year.

‘Sky Sports is my home, and the Soccer Saturday team are a big part of my life,’ Stelling said.

‘As the end of the season approached, and I was preparing to say goodbye, I realised that I was not ready to blow the final whistle and leave the best job in the world.’
