While Jannik Sinner gained a lot of praise after winning the Australian Open on Sunday, American alpine skier Lindsey Vonn took a humorous approach in congratulating the him.

Sinner won his first Grand Slam title after defeating Daniil Medvedev in spectacular fashion. After trailing by two sets, Sinner emerged victorious, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. 

His victory made Sinner the first Italian to win a Major title since Adriano Panatta in 1976. With the result, Vonn to Instagram to congratulate the 22-year old for his amazing feat. 

‘Congrats Jann!! So Happy for you!!’ She captioned a photo with Sinner taken during a ski trip. ‘Without a doubt the best Skier to win a grand slam.’ 

Sinner also received encouragement from Vonn ahead of the finals match as she expressed her excitement towards backing her friend.

Sinner and Vonn’s friendship sprung from their partnerships with Rolex. The skiing trips that the two have shared came from brand collaboration efforts after Sinner joined them as an ambassador in 2020. 

Before securing the major title, Sinner enjoyed a dominant run through the tournament. The eventual winner only dropped three sets in seven matches, including a win over 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic.

His win over the decorated champion saw Sinner snap a 33-match winning streak on his way to his tenth showdown against Medvedev.

‘It’s great emotions. I was just happy,’ Sinner said after the win. ‘Yesterday I still maybe couldn’t believe, and now I start to realize it, so it’s a great feeling. It’s nice to be here, the weather is good. I didn’t sleep much, but it’s great emotions, slowly realizing what I’ve done.’

‘There were obviously many emotions in my head,’ he added. ‘The hard work, the sacrifices I’ve done throughout my career, and sharing this moment with my team was maybe the best feeling I’ve had until now.’
