IPL 2023 Auction LIVE – CSK at IPL Auction: MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings is planning to go big on Sam Curran at IPL Auction on December 23rd. Curran who skipped IPL 2022 is back on ‘MOST WANTED’ list of CSK as the team is desperate for replacement of Dwayne Bravo. According to sources in CSK Camp, Dhoni has instructed team management to go big on Curran at IPL Auction: Follow IPL Auction LIVE Updates & Check CSK Squad IPL 2023 updates with InsideSport.IN
It is worth noting that Sam Curran isn’t new to Super Kings’ set-up. He was part of the yellow jersey squad in 2020 and 2021 and played 23 matches.
According to sources in CSK Camp, Dhoni feels Curran is like to like replacement for Bravo.
‘With Bravo not around anymore, Curran should be the team overseas quick feels team management and especially Dhoni. He can bowl at the death and also chip in with the bat lower down the order’, said a source close to CSK team management.

IPL 2023 Auction LIVE: Sam Curran on CSK’s ‘MOST WANTED’ list, Captain MS Dhoni interested in bringing back England all-rounder: Follow IPL Auction LIVE
Curran was picked by Super Kings for 5.5 crore in 2020.
Super Kings finished ninth in the ten-team tournament in 2022 but – true to reputation – have retained most of their players. Dwayne Bravo is the biggest name they let go of – he will be their bowling coach instead. They have retained their star allrounder Ravindra Jadeja despite rumours suggesting the marriage might be over. MS Dhoni, at 41, still remains captain but they will be keen to identify and groom someone to take over after the 2023 edition.
Current squad: MS Dhoni (capt, wk), Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, Subhranshu Senapati, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Dwaine Pretorius, Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, Tushar Deshpande, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Simarjeet Singh, Deepak Chahar, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana
What they have to play with
Super Kings have INR 20.45 crore (USD 2.4 million approx.) to spend at the auction. They have seven slots available, including two for overseas players.
What they need
Two Indian batters, of which one should ideally be a back-up wicketkeeper to Dhoni.
It won’t be bad for them if they can get hold of a strong overseas quick as well as an Indian quick, because that department looks a little thin despite Mukesh Choudhary’s success last season.
And while they are at it, why not an Indian wristspinner too?
The likely targets
Mayank Agarwal is another obvious target, like Curran. Though primarily a top-order batter, Agarwal dropped to the middle order last year to accommodate better strikers at the top. With Robin Uthappa, one of Super Kings’ main Indian middle-order batters last season, retiring Agarwal could be a great fit.
Josh Little made a big impact in the T20 World Cup in Australia this year, picking up 11 wickets in seven matches at a great economy of 7.00 for Ireland. That included a hat-trick [Kane Williamson, James Neesham and Mitchell Santner] against New Zealand.
Jaydev Unadkat could be a contender for a team that likes experienced hands, and Unadkat has worked with Dhoni and Stephen Fleming at Rising Pune Supergiants in IPL 2017. He had a memorable season then, claiming 24 wickets in 12 matches.

Chennai Super Kings CEO confirmed to InsideSport that their entire support staff will be joining via video conference.
“No, Stephen Fleming won’t be joining us for the auction. None of our foreign staff will be present in Kochi due to Christmas Celebrations. They will join by video conference,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told InsideSport.

The IPL 2023 Auction will be held on December 23 in Kochi. The BCCI has not budged on the date despite franchises requesting the same, due to Christmas festivities. In return, the Indian board has allowed video conferencing, meaning foreign staff could join in from their respective homes.
The IPL has always allowed phone calls during the bidding process, but the auction in Kochi will be the first time video conferencing is allowed. Thus, many of the foreign staff are likely to give the event a miss, including Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming.
Chennai have largely foreign support staff meaning the likes of Michael Hussey, Eric Simmons and Dwayne Bravo will also be absent. However, CEO Viswanathan will be ably assisted by Fleming virtually during the auction process. Previously, Lakshmipathy Balaji has been a staple at the table. However, the ex-India pacer was replaced by Bravo as the bowling coach.

Not only CSK but a host of other franchises have also growing overseas influence in their support staff. Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting will be available over call but he won’t be attending the auction in person, InsideSport understands.
Many of the foreign staff are in charge of decision-making. Sunrisers Hyderabad will be the worst hit. SRH are likely to be without its new head coach Brian Lara. Dale Steyn is also unlikely to join.
“Our foreign coaching staff won’t be attending the auction. They will be joining over phone call. I guess it will be the same for many teams. But I don’t think it is a big issue. Yes, it would have been better if the coaches could have joined us at the auction table. But we have to accept if the BCCI has finalised the date,”one of the franchise officials told InsideSport.

Franchise owners had requested BCCI to advance the Auction Day due to the unavailability of their foreign coaching staff. However, BCCI brushed off those concerns suggesting ‘logistical problems’. While phone call during the auction is allowed, whether there will be a dedicated video-conferencing facility, it is yet to be decided. A call on the same will be taken at a franchise’s meeting on December 21.
