Not everyone is all too excited about the return the Boston Celtics got for trading away restricted free agent Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks with a return of two second round draft picks and a $6.2 traded player exception (TPE). Among them is cohost of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast Gary Washburn.
In a recent episode of the pod, Washburn expressed his dissatisfaction with the Williams trade, citing the lack of value in second round picks. He believes it’s not an exciting move and questions the team’s use of trade exceptions in the past as well. Losing Marcus Smart and the Charlotte native affects the team’s identity, too.
Washburn acknowledges that the Celtics may not have had a choice due to other signings and Grant’s restricted free agency status, but that doesn’t mean we have to like the return.
