Greg Norman’s LIV future is in severe doubt and he has been marginalized by Saudi-backed series – despite him breaking his silence to declare shock merger ‘a great day in global golf’

Greg Norman has broken his silence to declare the merger of rival tours as a ‘great day in global golf’ – but he has not addressed the growing uncertainty around his own future with LIV.

The controversial Australian was not mentioned in the joint statements released by the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Nor was he listed as an initial member of the new board being created for the unified front.

Sources have insisted for months that the LIV CEO had been marginalized by the breakaway circuit, having served his initial purpose of launching the series in 2022 amid tremendous disruption and chaos to the traditional ecosystem.

The fact he was not notified by his Saudi paymasters that the parties were coming together until shortly before the announcement of the new pact on Tuesday has also pointed to a vastly diminished status at LIV.

Mail Sport understands his tenure is under severe threat, though LIV did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

LIV Golf are yet to make a formal statement on the decision to merge with the PGA Tour

While LIV are yet to issue a formal statement of their own on the merger, Norman has tweeted to say: ‘A great day in global golf for players and fans alike. The journey continues!!’

The future configuration of LIV is among the many unresolved issues raised by Tuesday’s deal.

With LIV rebels soon to be given a pathway to cross tours, it is understood to be a point of discussion that their existing circuit could dissipate into a series of team events dotted between PGA Tour tournaments.

That would support the commonly held theory that LIV has been used as a trojan horse to enable the Saudis to gain access to golf before the broader takeover of the sport.
