Nick Kyrgios has admitted he may ‘look like an idiot’ after losing a point in bizarre circumstances during his win over Daniil Medvedev at the US Open.

The Australian surged into the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows by defeating the World No1 and reigning US Open champion 7-6 (13-11) 3-6 6-3 6-2.

In typical Kyrgios fashion, there was plenty of drama at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 27-year-old argued with an umpire, produced some stunning shots and berated his coaching box.

Kyrgios also managed to lose a point by playing an illegal shot he described as ‘bone-headed’.

In the second game of the third set, the Aussie ran well past the line of the net and into Medvedev’s side of the court to hit a ball.

Kyrgios trotted past his opponent, as he celebrated much to the bemusement of the crowd, while Medvedev and the umpire both appeared slightly confused.

‘I still can’t believe the bone-headed play I made over here, I thought that was legal to be honest, that’s going to be everywhere on [ESPN show] SportsCenter so I’m going to look like an idiot,’ Kyrgios said in his post-match press conference.

The Australian reached a maiden Grand Slam final in July, losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and has the chance to go all the way at Flushing Meadows.

Kyrgios’ confidence is growing and after beating the world No.1 he acknowledged he was very happy with his performances of late.

‘It was an amazing match, obviously Daniil is defending champion, a lot of pressure on his shoulders,’ he said.

‘But I’ve been playing amazing the last couple of months, but what a place to do it, a packed house in New York.’

The Aussie is the first player to beat the top-ranked player in the world twice in the same year since 1987 and admitted he enjoyed the role of giant-killer.

‘I feel like tonight was another message that rankings don’t matter,’ he said.

‘I see No. 1 next to his name and I see 23 next to mine. That doesn’t change anything for me.

‘I don’t care whether I’m seeded or not. It’s nice otherwise I could draw him first round. Do you know what I mean? The rankings, I mean, I don’t think they mean anything.’
