When the Philadelphia 76ers needed help in December of the 2021-22 season, they were able to find some in the form of veteran Tyler Johnson. The Sixers were hit hard by COVID-19 as players were entering the health and safety protocols and the Sixers needed players available to avoid postponements.
Johnson played in three games for the Sixers averaging 3.7 points and giving Philadelphia a ball-handler, some toughness, and some 3-point shooting when they needed it. After his 10 days were up, he then signed another 10-day deal with the San Antonio Spurs and coach Doc Rivers even said he wished the team could have kept Johnson.
Unfortunately, another NBA chance did not come up for him, and he will now head to Australia as he has signed a deal with the NBL team, the Brisbane Bullets.
Their GM, Sam Mackinnon is excited to add Johnson as he stated:
“We identified recruiting an American guard and to be able to sign someone of Tyler Johnson’s ability and pedigree ticks the box of our recruiting brief,” Mackinnon said.
“Adding Tyler to our back court of Sobey and Cadee gives us great flexibility and we add another playmaker. He can shoot the ball exceptionally well, creates for his teammates and many people have spoken about what a quality human being he is.”
Johnson will likely be looking for his next opportunity in the NBA whenever that pops up so this opportunity in Australia will do good things for him and his basketball future.
