SRT vs THU Highlights: After the most disastrous collapse on the most extraordinary night in Big Bash League history, the Sydney Thunder have been compared to a “under 10s team.” Rashid Khan was unable to bowl as his quick bowling teammates reduced the Thunder to 15 all out in just 35 balls, the lowest T20 total ever achieved by a men’s side (beating Turkey’s 21 against the Czech Republic in 2019).
On Friday night, with Brendon Doggett leading the way with four, the Thunder simply embarrassed themselves in attempting to win by 140. At the Sydney Showgrounds, the Thunder lost five wickets in the first 17 balls, including Rilee Rossouw, who was taken for perhaps the summer’s best catch by striker Matt Short at first slip.
Without posing a threat to the scorers, Alex Hales, Matt Gilkes, Jason Sangha, Chris Green, and Gurinder Sandhu all departed. Daniel Sams was unfortunate to go for one when the ball smacked off his thigh pad and onto the stumps, while Alex Ross end up going for two.
Rashid and captain Peter Siddle were repelled from the attack by young Henry Thornton (5-3) and Wes Agar (4-6), who were the heroes of the game. The previous worst six-fer in BBL history was a 6-26, therefore the Thunder’s 6-9 is the lowest six-fer ever. The Strikers’ Short’s catch of the season caused the unprecedented collapse. Short leaped into the air and brought in the one-handed catch while still standing at the first slip.
The Thunder’s unexpected collapse spoiled Afghani recruit Fazalhaq Farooqi’s stellar bowling display, which saw him take 3-20 from his allowed four overs.
