Tennis is proving itself a generational sport. Brandon Holt, son of two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin, was beaten in a final-set tiebreak by Pedro Cachin.
Elizabeth Mandlik, daughter of four-time Grand Slam winner Hana Mandlikova, put up a fight against Ons Jabeur but lost. Andy Murray beat Emilio Nava, whose mother represented Mexico at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

OSAKA LEFT EMPTY HANDED
Two-time US Open winner Naomi Osaka will finish a season without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2017 after losing to Danielle Collins.
The former world No 1 (below) has spoken out previously about her mental health struggles.
‘I feel restrained,’ said Osaka. ‘I can’t hit the shots I know I can. Maybe I need to watch (Carlos) Alcaraz.’

JOE GETS BALL ROLLING
Britain’s Joe Salisbury and partner Rajeev Ram began the defence of their US Open men’s doubles crown by seeing off Federico Coria and Cristian Rodriguez.
The pair have performed well at the Slams this year but will want to improve on a quarter-final and two semi-finals.
SAKKARI’S GREEK TRAGEDY
Maria Sakkari’s nightmare year continued as she lost to Wang Xiyu. The world No 3 from Greece has been beaten by players outside the top 50 at the last three Slams.
She is the third top-10 seed to fall after Simona Halep and Daria Kasatkina.
