Elena Rybakina SLAMS Pam Shriver’s claims that her coach didn’t show her respect during Australian Open final as ‘fake news’…while Emma Raducanu’s ex-mentor defends his colleague and demands apology from the US tennis legend

  • Aryna Sabalenka beat Elena Rybakina 4-6 6-3 6-4 to win Australian Open
  • Pam Shriver accuses Rybakina’s coach Stefano Vukov of lacking respect
  • But Vukov was defended by Emma Raducanu’s former coach Dmitry Tursunov

American legend Pam Shriver found herself embroiled in a row over coaching behaviour in the wake of the Australian Open women’s final.

Emma Raducanu’s one-time mentor Dmitry Tursunov hit back at her after she made pointed remarks about Stefano Vukov, coach of Elena Rybakina, who lost to Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday night.

Later Rybakina herself stepped in to defend the man who also took her to last summer’s Wimbledon title.

Former Wimbledon doubles champion Shriver has been campaigning for greater protective measures when it comes to men coaching women, based on her own experience as a player.

She took exception to the way that Vukov was communicating with Rybakina from the box – which is now legal in a current trial period – and took to social media to express her thoughts.

‘As I watch Rybakina try to win her second major in 7 months, I hope she finds a coach who speaks and treats her with respect at ALL times and does not ever accept anything less,’ she tweeted.

That brought a strong response from both Tursunov and Rybakina.

The player responded: ‘Unlike people that are making these comments he has great knowledge about me as a player and an athlete. I would never accept a coach that didn’t respect me. Please disregard any fake news to the contrary.’

Tursunov backed up his fellow coach, telling Shriver: ‘You have zero clue what you are talking about and at the very least owe a public apology to a man who is a great coach in every sense of that word.’

The WTA are looking into ways of adding to player safeguarding, which has undoubtedly been an issue in the sport over the years. There is no suggestion that Vukov has ever been involved in anything unprofessional.

The whole issue is fraught with complications. While Shriver would like to see strict rules on relationships between players and coaches, there remains the issue of how it is possible to stop adults having the freedom to do things that are entirely consensual.

Meanwhile Sabalenka will move to world number two in the new rankings, behind Poland’s Iga Swiatek.
