Draymond gives Klay eye-catching praise after Warriors’ win originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Draymond Green’s early dismissal from Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals dominated the storylines after the Warriors’ 117-116 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday.

And thanks to Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke’s spicy comments, it still is.

But after addressing the controversial ejection on his podcast Sunday evening, Draymond made sure to give flowers to his teammate of 10 years, Klay Thompson.

Thompson struggled for much of Game 1 and entered the fourth quarter with just seven points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field. He played just 9:38 of the first half due to foul trouble. But Thompson stepped up and hit a monster shot when the Dubs needed him most — a 3-pointer to give the Warriors the lead for good with 36.6 seconds left.

“That’s what Klay Thompson does,” Green said on the latest episode of “The Draymond Green Show.” “You know, I was sitting in the back in the locker room, and before he caught the ball, when they swung it to him I said, ‘Here’s the one. Here’s the one right here.’ Because that’s what Klay Thompson does. Klay Thompson makes big shots. We’ve seen that play over and over again where Klay Thompson catches that, and he knocks it down right on the wing.”

The clutch bucket from downtown didn’t end Thompson’s struggles, though. Thompson, a career 84.9-percent shooter from the charity stripe, uncharacteristically missed two free-throw attempts with 6.7 seconds left that would have given Golden State a three-point lead.

“Now, what I do have to talk to Klay Thompson about is these missed free throws,” Draymond joked. “I also need to talk to Steph Curry about these missed free throws. What’s going on with my guys? They don’t miss free throws.

Just seconds after missing the free-throw attempts, Thompson turned the page and defended Memphis guard Ja Morant in the game’s final possession. He forced a tough angle on Morant’s potential game-winning layup, slamming the door on Game 1.

“But in typical Klay fashion, being the biggest competitor that I’ve ever stepped on the basketball court with, including myself — what did he do? He goes and gets a stop, and we go on home.

“Guys stepped up to the plate, and it was such a beautiful thing to see,” Green said.
