Otto: Draymond’s IQ helps him see things ‘before a normal person’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Draymond Green is a special talent who has made his mark on the NBA in a very unique way.

His numbers don’t always show that, but his impact on the floor is immeasurable.

The Warriors veteran forward understands the game of basketball beyond the Xs and Os.

“His IQ is on a whole other level,” Otto Porter Jr. told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Grant Liffmann on a recent Dubs Talk. “The way he sees the game, the way he sees things happen before a normal person would see it happen. It’s good to have guys like that because then you can react off of them.

“It’s amazing to see how in-tune to the game he’s really in. There are a couple times where I’ll be rotating around and I see him go and I’m like ‘OK, I see what he’s doing now I’m going to have his back.’ So extremely high IQ, as high as I’ve ever seen.”

Before Draymond landed in the Bay, the Warriors missed the playoffs five straight years in a row.

But in his rookie season, that one-of-a-kind IQ helped the Dubs reach their first postseason since the playoff drought, and led Golden State to five consecutive NBA Finals appearances and three championships.

Now in his 10th season with the Warriors, Green has developed into an important leader as the team pushes for their sixth NBA Finals appearance in the past eight seasons.

His elite defensive ability and vocal leadership make him a rare breed.

“He puts people in position, he puts guys in spots and helps guys out,” Porter Jr. told Liffmann. “He sees everything. He knows. It just makes our defense that much better.

“He’s one of those guys that brings it every night. You know what he’s about when he steps on the court … Another competitor. He’s just straightforward. What you see is what you get.”

With playoffs around the corner, the hope is that Draymond will be joined by veteran teammates Steph Curry and Klay Thompson as the trio of leaders will make their eighth postseason run in their Decade in the Bay together.
