Donald Trump tells Cam Smith and other top golfers to abandon the ‘very disloyal’ PGA tour and join rebel Saudi-backed LIV comp – as Aussie stands to earn $132million for making the switch

  • The former POTUS congratulated Smith on his win at the British Open
  • He put out a message on his own social media network saying he should join LIV
  • Trump said ‘smart’ golfers would make the leap before an ultimate merger
  • He has not responded to calls from family members of 911 victims who are protesting his involvement in LIV and accepting Saudi government funding

Former US President Donald Trump is urging golfers – including Australia’s Cam Smith – to take the LIV Golf money on offer before it is too late.

It comes as family members of the victims of the horrific 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington have appealed for the ex-POTUS to cease his support for the Saudi-backed rebel league, only for their calls to fall on deaf ears.

The Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster is set to be the venue for the next LIV Golf competition, which will run from July 29-31.

Trump National course at Doral in Florida has also been confirmed for an LIV competition in October.

A host of new players are expected to be signed by the rebel tour before then, with the PGA Tour’s majors season finished.

The new additions are reportedly likely to include Australians Cam Smith, Adam Scott and Marc Leishman, with Smith expected to sign a deal worth $132million after his British Open heroics.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform this week to urge Smith and other top golfers to join LIV now or risk missing out entirely.

‘All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes, and you get nothing but a big ‘thank you’ from PGA officials who are making Millions of Dollars a year,’ Trump wrote.

‘If you don’t take the money now, you will get nothing after the merger takes place, and only say how smart the original signees were,’ he added.

Meanwhile, a group of family members of victims of 9/11 has penned an open letter to the former President urging him to drop his involvement in the Saudi-backed competition.

Of the 15 men who were involved in 9/11, 11 were Saudi nationals.

‘We simply cannot understand how you could agree to accept money from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s golf league to host their tournament at your golf course, and to do so in the shadows of Ground Zero in New Jersey, which lost over 700 residents during the attacks,’ the group wrote in its letter.

‘It is difficult for us to fully express the extreme pain, frustration and anger this upcoming tournament at Bedminster causes our community … it is incomprehensible to us that a former President of the United States would cast our loved ones aside for personal financial gain.’
