The time for Gareth Southgate to submit his final 26-man squad to compete at the World Cup in Qatar next month is fast approaching.

And the 52-year-old has taken every opportunity to assess each player vying for a plane ticket in recent weeks, watching on as Everton beat Crystal Palace 3-0 from the stands on Saturday.

Here Sportsmail takes a look at those who will have caught Southgate’s eye this week, and those who will be hoping the Three Lions boss was not watching.

GOOD WEEK

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN

Perfect timing. With Gareth Southgate in the stands, Calvert-Lewin turned briefly into Dennis Bergkamp against Crystal Palace on Saturday, selling Marc Guehi with a cushioned touch around the corner and spinning in behind.

It was his first goal of the season and, if he can finally stay fit for an extended period, could be the kickstart he needs to push for a place as Harry Kane’s back-up.

LUKE SHAW

Much like Harry Maguire, Shaw was still starting for England even when Erik ten Hag did not fancy him. Unlike Maguire, however, Shaw is playing right into form, capped by a delicious cross for Casemiro’s late equaliser at Stamford Bridge.

With the other options waning, Shaw looks to have the left back shirt for Iran on November 21.

JAMES MADDISON

Every week he adds more credibility to his claim for a place on the plane to Qatar.

The Leicester man has been one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League this season and added his sixth goal in 10 appearances at Wolves. He alone is too good for Leicester to go down.

BAD WEEK

JACK GREALISH

Since the Manchester City winger celebrated winning the title in May by having a needless dig at Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron, the Paraguayan has spent his time showing the world what he can do that Grealish has not.

Almiron has six goals this season, Grealish one. The City man is not in danger of losing his place in the squad, but he does need to show more to threaten the starting line-up.

MARC GUEHI

Guehi endured a nightmare afternoon at Goodison Park with Everton’s dynamic attack turning him and the rest of the back four inside out. Not the time to have a stinker with Southgate watching on.

ERIC DIER

England’s defence is a huge concern and Dier has fallen victim to the loss of form of so many of the centre-back options, after a strong start to the season.

It’s not a good sign that he and Maguire can only be fully trusted if they have two other centre backs playing with them.
