Joe Dumars has a new gig.
The Detroit Pistons Hall of Famer was appointed as the NBA’s executive vice president, head of basketball operations, the league announced on Monday. Dumars’ first day will be May 9.

“Joe’s extensive track record of accomplishment as an NBA player and team executive and the leadership and expertise that he has demonstrated in various roles make him a natural fit to drive efforts to further enhance the game,” NBA president of league operations Byron Spruell said in a release. “As a respected longtime member of the NBA family, Joe has developed strong relationships across the league that will set the foundation for success in his new position.”
In his new role with the NBA, Dumars will oversee the development of playing rules and interpretations, conduct and discipline, and policies and procedures relating to the operation of games, according to a release from the league. Dumars was previously the Sacramento Kings’ special advisor to the general manager for three seasons.

Dumars is one of the greatest Pistons in franchise history, winning championships in 1989 and 1990, making six All-Star teams and earning five All-Defensive team bids during his 14-year career.
When he retired as a player, he joined the Pistons’ front office and was the team’s president of basketball operations from 2000 until 2014. Dumars was the architect of the 2004 NBA championship team. His jersey was retired in 2000.
