Danil Medvedev became the first big casualty of the French Open when the world No 2 lost in five sets to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild.

The Brazilian edged a tight first set after a tiebreak and then chucked away a couple of set points in the second.

The Russian leaned back in his chair with a grin before taking the third and seemingly ending any thoughts of a first-round exit.

But the world No 172 fought back to win the final two sets with an aesthetic array of shots that had the Parisian crowd on their feet on Court Philippe Chatrier.

It came at the stadium where Brazil won their last Grand Slam via Gustavo ‘Guga’ Kuerten in 1997 and Seyboth Wild played up to the spectators and geed them up in between points.

He broke second seed Medvedev’s serve three times in the final set and saw out a famous win in four hours and 15 minutes.
