Daniil Medvedev continued his feisty relationship with the US Open crowd on Saturday as he thanked supporters who reserved their cheers for breaks in play while mocking one crowd member who proved particularly vocal during his third round victory over Sebastian Baez.

The 2019 champion fell behind a break in a contentious third set of his straight sets win against the Argentinian and requested umpire Aurelie Tourte remind the crowd to stay silent between first and second serves.

The Russian’s repeated gestures to those in the stands to be silent engendered a wave of boos, which he has become somewhat accustomed to. Still, Medvedev was keen to call out one fan in his post-match comments after his tie-break win clinched passage to the next round.

‘Thanks a lot to all the guys who don’t shout between first and second serve,’ he said. ‘You guys are great.

‘But I think there is one guy, I don’t know if he has a girlfriend or a wife. But I don’t know how she’s going to sleep because he’s so pumped up that in the night he’s going to be saying “VAMO! VAMO! VAMO! VAMO!” Like non-stop. I feel sorry for him.’

Saturday’s exchange follows another incident involving the 27-year-old and supporters at Flushing Meadows after the No 3 seed took on a couple during his win over Christopher O’Connell on Thursday.

A tetchy Medvedev appeared to have been angered by a couple of fans who were walking to their seats as he lined up a serve and shouted: ‘Can you shut up? Are you stupid or what?’

One of the female fans blew Medvedev a kiss in response as his fury led to boos on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Medvedev will take on No 13 seed Alex de Minaur for a place in the quarter finals as he continues his bid to win a second Grand slam of his career.
