‘Hall of shame by Nawaz’: Cricket fans react to hectic finish in India’s opening T20 World Cup clash with arch-rivals Pakistan – as Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 82 takes Rahul Dravid’s side to a famous win in the FINAL ball of their innings

  • Virat Kohli guided India to a famous victory in their opening World Cup match
  • Pakistan had looked for all the world to be cruising to a win in Melbourne
  • Indian resurgence that saw them chase down 16 in final over got them over line

India recorded one of their most famous T20I wins on Sunday when they overcame Pakistan thanks to a late resurgence that saw them chase down 16 in the final over.

Thanks in large part to Virat Kohli’s sensational unbeaten 82, Ravi Ashwin hit the winning runs on the final ball of the game with the prospect of a super over looming large.

Needing 48 from the final three overs, it seemed improbable that India would get close. However, a combination of brilliant attacking cricket and some questionable Pakistan bowling left the door ajar for India.

Mohammad Nawaz endured a horror final over as he conceded 16 runs to lose the game

Reacting on social media, supporters were split between amazement at the skill on show but also dismayed at Mohammad Nawaz’s seeming loss of mettle in the final over.

The left arm spinner threw down a number of deliveries that were greatly received by Kohli as well as a wide and a no ball which was dispatched for a boundary.

‘This has been the worst last over in history of last overs, hall of shame by Nawaz,’ one supporter noted.

Another wrote: ‘Nawaz choosing now to bowl the worst over of his life, dear me.’

Leaving aside the obvious mistakes made by Nawaz at the death, others chose to focus on Kohli’s exploits.

Leave all the records aside, this innings alone makes Kohli the greatest batsman of our time,’ one individual boldly exclaimed.

‘Virat Kohli you are the king,’ another simply wrote.

‘Heartbreak for Pakistan. This one will hurt. India had to come back from the dead to win that one. In the end…it all came down to one man…and that man was Virat Kohli. Played an amazing, legendary innings. What can you do. You have to respect it,’ another added.

Meanwhile, others defended Nawaz, pointing out the runs that Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf had gone for in the overs preceding his.

‘Unfair to single out Nawaz. Shaheen went for 17 and then Haris for 15 leaving only 16 for Nawaz to defend and he almost pulled it off if it weren’t for that no ball call,’ they wrote.

Others were less kind to Pakistan.

‘Pakistan have bottled it – absolute plonkers,’ one support drily wrote.

The win leaves India top of Group B with them and Pakistan opening up the fixtures for the group.

Rahul Dravid’s side play Holland next at the Sydney Cricket Ground while Pakistan travel to Perth to play Zimbabwe.
