The No. 12 seed put the disappointment of crashing out of the doubles competition to one side on Friday afternoon to win 6-2, 6-3 in the third round at Flushing Meadows.

Gauff has failed to drop a set in the singles tournament so far with the 18-year-old hitting form at just the right time.

‘It means a lot to me. I thought am I cursed? I missed my alarm so was late. Kudos to my team as I wasn’t in the best spirits this morning,’ Gauff said on court post-match.

‘I was really going for my shots. I’m gonna go down swinging.

‘You’ve just got to fight for every point. She returned well and I was just trying to hang in there but I think I won maybe seven games in a row.

‘Thank you guys for cheering for me. I wasn’t sure how the crowd was gonna go, we all love Madison, I’m good friends with her off the court.’

Gauff’s victory preceded Serena Williams’ third-round match with Ajla Tomljanovic and the 18-year-old hopes the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s US Open journey can continue so that she can play her next week.

‘Even the day when I watched it on TV I had to order room service. I know she’s on my side of the draw and I don’t know when I might face her but that’s the goal,’ she added on one of her idols.

‘It’s just crazy being on this court. Five years ago I had courtside seats and now I’m on the court.’

Gauff began tentatively and was broken in the first game but quickly regrouped, breaking back and firing an ace up the tee for a 4-1 lead she would not relinquish.

The teenager maintained her level in the second set as she redirected former finalist Keys’ powerful ground strokes and sealed the win on her opponent’s 22nd unforced error.

In the round of 16, Gauff will face Shuai Zhang of China. Zhang was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Canadian Rebecca Marino on Friday. Zhang won 33 of her 45 first-serve points (73.3 percent) and never faced a break point.

No. 5 seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia and No. 18 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia will meet in the Round of 16 after winning Friday.

Jabeur dropped the first set before battling back to defeat American Shelby Rogers, the No. 31 seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Jabeur is the second-best seed remaining in the women’s draw, behind only Swiatek. It also marks her first time reaching the second week at the US Open.
