The BBC has confirmed that Clare Balding will lead the live television coverage of Wimbledon following the retirement of Sue Barker after 30 years in the role.

Balding was always the favourite to become chief presenter having worked at Wimbledon as a reporter, commentator and presenter for BBC radio and television since 1995.

Her first major role on TV was as lead presenter for the BBC’s horse racing coverage after the retirement of Julian Wilson in 1997 while she has since taken up a similar role covering rugby league and has gone on to work on many other major sporting events for the BBC including seven Olympic Games.

The partnership between the BBC and the All England Club is the longest in sports broadcasting history, spanning more than 85 years on BBC TV and over 95 years on BBC radio.

Balding said: “It’s a huge honour to be given this responsibility but I am very aware that no one person can fill Sue’s shoes. This will always be a team effort and we’re lucky that the BBC lineup includes former professionals with huge insight as well as wonderful reporters and commentators. It’s my job to bring out the best in them and to help make our viewers feel they have a front row seat on the greatest sporting stage”
