Leicester lost top spot to Ipswich on Tuesday night, but they now lead them by a point.

The Birmingham manager, Wayne Rooney, claimed his first points away from home with a 1-0 win at Cardiff.

Juninho Bacuna’s goal on the stroke of half-time proved enough to decide an entertaining encounter at Cardiff City Stadium that was low on quality. The result ends a run of eight away defeats in a row for Birmingham and five for Rooney since the former England striker took over at St Andrew’s in October.

Samuel Edozie scored his first goal since September to extend Southampton’s unbeaten run to 12 games with a 1-1 draw at Coventry.

Norwich warmed up for their East Anglian derby at high-flying Ipswich on Saturday by beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at Carrow Road to make it four wins in their past six Championship games.

An early wonder-strike on his full debut from Borja Sainz set the Canaries on their way but it was all square at the break thanks to Bailey Cadamarteri’s header. Ashley Barnes restored City’s lead and Jonathan Rowe’s back-post header settled the issue after 72 minutes.

The winner by Ozan Tufan, on as a substitute, eight minutes from time completed a memorable turnaround to secure 2-1 win for Hull at Middlesbrough.

Boro had led at half-time courtesy of Emmanuel Latte Lath’s seventh goal of the season in the sixth minute. But Middlesbrough, who have now lost four of their past five matches, failed to capitalise further on a poor Tigers first half.

Hull, making the most of vital substitutions by the head coach, Liam Rosenior, responded fittingly to win it when Liam Delap’s goal with 21 minutes to go was followed by Tufan’s fifth of the campaign.

Ten-man Plymouth battled to earn a point in a 0-0 draw with QPR at Loftus Road.

Dan Scarr was sent off in the 25th minute when the hosts counterattacked after Sam Field won the ball, and the defender scythed down Ilias Chair with a crude challenge just inside the Argyle half. Up to that point, Plymouth had been much the better side but in the end they were happy to come away with a point.
