Brad Stevens strongly denies speculation over Lakers coaching job originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

If you believe Brad Stevens is a man of his word, you can put the chances of him taking the Los Angeles Lakers’ vacant head coach job at 0 percent.

The Lakers job opened up earlier this week when Los Angeles fired Frank Vogel after his star-studded squad missed the postseason. Stevens is just one year removed from a successful eight-year stint coaching the Celtics, so would he consider getting back into coaching — even if it meant joining Boston’s longtime nemesis?

“No. Not entertaining,” Stevens told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher & Rich” on Thursday about the possibility of him pursuing the Lakers job. “First of all, I have no idea what my future holds. I’m in one of those positions where someone decides to move on from me and this is the world we live in.

“I’m definitely not leaving to go to the Lakers. I know that for a fact.”

Stevens is thriving in his new role as Celtics president of basketball operations, making a series of moves last offseason and at this year’s NBA trade deadline that helped catapult Boston to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference while developing a strong core around young stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

The Lakers also have been tied to several coaching candidates — Quin Snyder, Doc Rivers, Nick Nurse and Mark Jackson, to name a few — none of which are Stevens.

“I have not been a person they will reach out to anyway,” Stevens said. “They’ve got a lot of good candidates. They have a lot of better candidates than me I’m sure.”

And while the NBA is a business, Stevens seemed well aware of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry while insisting he wouldn’t think of joining the Purple and Gold.

“How about the fact that I’ve lived in Boston for nine years and everything in my closet is green. That is enough. Isn’t that a little bit of a rivalry? Come on,” Stevens said.

“My whole existence has been about getting this team to be as good as it could be. Let’s keep it that way. The good news is we just wasted a few minutes.”

As our Chris Forsberg noted Monday, Stevens has privately noted he’s not interested in being a coaching lifer, and he seems to be enjoying his new front office role with Boston.

Perhaps his mindset changes a few years from now, but it seems pretty clear that Stevens isn’t taking his talents to SoCal.
