Jude Bellingham has done it again. His second half header from a corner gave Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo and it means his team are top and he’s La Liga’s leader scorer.

Joseph Aidoo was limpet tight to the England man but Bellingham just rolled him and powered his header home to settle the game nine minutes from time. Then came the now famous arms outstretched celebration and the home supporters’ jeers – they had controlled him for long spells but he’d got the better of them in the end.

It gave Madrid three points in a game which also saw Kepa Arrizabalaga’s debut and an injury to Vinicius.

Chelsea loanee Kepa almost conceded from Celta’s first attack. He punched a corner clear but it dropped to Fran Beltran and his shot was diverted home by Strand Larsen. The Norwegian striker had a handful of Kepa’s shirt in the build-up and so the goal did not stand. Celta will complain that Larsen had not impeded Kepa punching clear.

Rafa Benitez, up against the club he managed briefly replacing Carlo Ancelotti in 2015, had set Celta up in a 5-4-1 without the ball and they stifled the threat of Bellingham in the first half blocking passes to him and dealing with his runs into the area thanks to their extra centre-back.

With the ball Celta sprang into a more attacking 3-4-3 and they almost scored when Jonathan Bamba’s shot curled just wide.

Madrid struggled to make inroads and lost the hamstrung Vinicius after 16 minutes when he pulled up after a powerful run forward that ended with him failing to find Rodrygo Goes.

Bellingham was being bumped around by Celta Vigo defenders but he found space brilliantly just before half time only for Joselu to drift offside. He scored from the Englishman’s pass but the flag was up.

On he hour Ancelotti brought on Toni Kroos and Luka Modric for Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni and almost immediately Bellinghman looked to have twisted his knee and was hobbling. Would he have to come off? No, he instead threaded the ball through to Rodrygo and Ivan Villar came hurtling out to bring him down.

There was a rematch between the two for the penalty and Villar saved from Rodrygo’s kick diving well to his right.

Bellingham had fully recovered from the injury scare and was starting to find spaces in front of Celta’s defence.

Benitez responded by sending on another defensive midfielder in Renato Tapia but it was not enough.

With nine minutes left Modric’s corner was headed towards the six-yard box by Joselu and Bellingham’s header left Villar with no chance.

Madrid nine points from nine, and four goals for Bellingham.
