Tomljanovic protested against Ostapenko using a medical timeout after she had won six games on the trot, accusing her of ‘lying’ in order to get a break.

After a belated handshake, the war of words got personal.

Ostapenko: ‘If you think I’m faking it, you can talk with the physio. Your behaviour is terrible. You have zero respect.’

Tomljanovic: ‘You’re the one to talk.’

Ostapenko: ‘What? You’re the worst player on tour.’

Some fans have labelled the 25-year-old a ‘tennis brat’, but Ostapenko doesn’t seem to mind.

‘With me it’s never boring on the court, so I think that’s what the fans like,’ Ostapenko said after her victory against Gauff

‘Of course, sometimes I can go a little bit too much, but I’m an emotional person in general. So it’s always hard to find this balance.’
