Cam Norrie breezes past Benoit Paire 6-0, 7-6, 6-0 to reach the US Open second round and continue British players’ fine start in New York after some shameless tanking by the tempestuous Frenchman

Cam Norrie profited from some shameless tanking by opponent Benoit Paire as he sped into the US Open second round.
The British number one became the fourth GB singles player into the second round (with Dan Evans and Emma Raducanu to come) when he beat the tempestuous Frenchman 6-0 7-6 6-0 in just 98 minutes.
Paire only looked interested in the second set, having won just eight points in the opener, sometimes not bothering to run for the ball and playing ridiculously fast between his own serves.
While Paire showed his talent in going a break up for 5-3 in the second set, the opener took just 18 minutes and the third one just a minute longer. He threw the towel in after losing the tiebreak 7-1.
That is unlikely to bother Norrie who will now meet Portuguese veteran Joao Sousa or American McKenzie MacDonald.
