The 2020 Tokyo Olympian carded a -3, 69 round, with a little help from a crazy scramble on the 12th hole rough, which made for an insane birdie.

Smith missed the green on the par three and pulled off a crafty chip that kicked off the fringe and rolled across to the surface into the cup.

The Brisbane born icon believes his game is in a good place.

‘I’m playing some of the best golf of my life’, Smith said.

‘I think mentally I’m in a good spot. I’ve got a few things to tidy up with my longer stuff.

Obviously very comfortable with my game, very confident in my game, but this place for me is always a hard one given the driver doesn’t really go straight for me. So I really worked on that last week and just giving myself as many birdie opportunities as I can, and just hit some good shots.’

His mullet magic was on display in Round one of the tournament, rolling in another chip from 10 feet off the green to sink a classy birdie.

The Floridian who lives in Jacksonville, about 600km north of Miami has pocketed almost $34million Australian dollars since turning pro in 2013 and joining the PGA in 2015.

If he is to go on and be crowned champion, Smith will take home $3million AUD and could buy much more fishing gear to join his $400,000+ vessel.

Smith is the last to tee off in Ohio tomorrow for round three and will stake his claim at a record which could put him alongside golf’s biggest name, Tiger Woods.

If Smith is to win, he will become the first player since Woods in 2001 to take out both the Players Championship and Memorial Tournament in a PGA calendar season.

While a five-time PGA victor, Smith struggled to close this year’s masters tournament after sitting three shots behind the winner and world number one, Scottie Scheffler.

At the final round of the Masters, Smith snap-hooked drives and had to recover on many occasions from the trees.

A wayward drive of Smith’s missed the fairway at the PGA championship back in May and struck the head of American golfer Aaron Wise, luckily he escaped with just a headache.

Fellow Australians Cam Davis, Lucas Herbert and Adam Scott all made the cut, with the closest down under player Jason Day at +1.

Smith is paired with American Denny McCarthy for round three, who sits just one shot behind the in-form Aussie.
