Cam Norrie hit the third round brick wall at a Grand Slam again last night as the British singles challenge at the French Open ended in meek fashion.
Missing a welter of opportunities, the GB number one was ousted by the brutal ball-striking of Russia’s Karen Khachanov at the French Open, succumbing 6-2 7-5 5-7 6-4.
Trying to secure his debut berth in the last sixteen of a Major – and facing a third round opponent not named Federer or Nadal for the first time – Norrie could not summon up the same form he shows on the regular tour.

For all his admirable consistency elsewhere, he still cannot translate that into a deep run at one of the biggest events.
Most frustrating will be his failure to execute on the big points. At one stage he had missed 15 out of 16 break opportunities, and by the end of the three hours and 37 minutes he had improved that to five out of 21.
There were too many unforced errors at key times, although he looked poised for a comeback when the 6’ 6” Russian bruiser tightened up at the end of the third set. Khachanov regrouped at the start of the fourth, the floodlights now in full use, and despite some late resistance closed it out.
