The celebrations will begin with haste for Brian Harman, the Georgia native who was just crowned Champion Golfer of the Year.

Going into Sunday’s final round at Hoylake with the 36-hole and 54-hole leads, Harman stayed steady in the rain and won his first major championship at the Open by six shots.

Minutes after Harman placed his hands on the Claret Jug for the first time, he thanked his family and those who put the tournament together – while also acknowledging he had a new task at hand.

‘I gotta thank my wife, my family back home,’ Harman said. I can’t wait to get back to them tomorrow. First I’ve gotta have a couple of pints out of this trophy, I believe.

Later, speaking to NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico, Harman talked about his mindset throughout the tournament.

‘The hardest part was not getting off to a good start these last two days… that’s what I’ve struggled with a lot in my career is getting ahead of myself… but my caddie Scott Tway helped with that.’

He added, ‘I truly didn’t think about winning the tournament until I hit that last putt.’

When asked about what it means to have his name engraved on the most storied trophy in golf, Harman said, ‘Cool as it gets. It’s the best tournament in the world and I’m just thrilled.’
