Breaking down the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA offseason

new balance

The Boston Celtics had one of the bolder offseasons of any team in the NBA. They elected to break up a successful core that couldn’t quite get over the hump in the quest for another title.

They traded veteran point guard Marcus Smart and reserve forward Grant Williams and brought in star big man Kristaps Porzingis. The front office made the moves with an eye toward breaking the not-quite-enough tendency that has plagued the the franchise in recent postseason runs.

Porzingis’ fit with Boston’s All-NBA forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and the Latvian center’s ability to adapt to a tertiary role may well determine the wisdom of this move. So, too, could player health given Porzingis’ previous problems with staying on the court.
