Dropped it! Awkward moment Steve Smith BREAKS the Frank Worrell Trophy after Australia thrash the West Indies to win the series… with part of it landing onto David Warner’s foot while the Aussie skipper tries to fix it

Steve Smith endured an embarrassing moment after Australia wrapped up a 2-0 win over the West Indies to retain the Frank Worrell Trophy.

At the end-of-the series presentation Smith, who stood in as captain in place of the injured Pat Cummins, broke the trophy and then proceeded to drop part of it onto David Warner’s foot.

Unfortunately for the Aussie batter, the faux pas was caught by the cameras.

Steve Smith appeared to break the Frank Worrell Trophy on Sunday after Australia retained it following a comprehensive 2-0 win over the West Indies

The trophy, which has a wood finish base and silver body topped by a cricket ball, appeared to break as Smith knelt down with his teammates while posing for a picture.

Footage shows the ball at the top of trophy becoming separated from the body, as Smith settles himself in front of the camera. Having realised something is clearly wrong, the 33-year-old then looks to reposition the ball in its slot, but to no avail.

Eventually, Smith had to hold the trophy together with his hands as the obligatory winning ceremony pictures were being taken.

Worse was to come still, as Smith dropped the ball onto Warner’s foot as he got back up.

‘Have they just taken the ball off the top of the trophy? I hope not,’ Australian cricket great Adam Gilchrist said on Fox Sports.

But almost certainly the Frank Worrell Trophy will need some repairing after Australia retained it again following comfortable 2-0 win in the two-Test series.

Having won the first Test in Perth last week by 164 runs, Australia thrashed the West Indies by 419 runs at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday, with the tourists folding to 77 all out while chasing an improbable 497.

Australia have won 15 of their last 19 Tests against the West Indies drawing the other four and haven’t lost against them since 2003.

Named after Sir Frank Worrell, the West Indies’ second-ever Black captain, the trophy has been awarded since 1960-61 but Australia have held it since the 1994-95 series.

Australia have now won their last seven series against the West Indies to nil, a dominant run of form that shows no signs of ending.
