Is the level of concern we are seeing about star Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III’s cleanup operation a bit overwrought? The procedure, which the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn reports will take place on Thursday (and the same day as Danilo Gallinari’s), is described as “not a major one” by Heavy’s Sean Deveney, who turned to his sources to learn more about what went into the decision to have the operation now rather than earlier in the offseason.

Per Deveney, “Williams opted to keep pressure off the knee” after Boston saw their season ended by the Golden State Warriors. Timelord instead spent July healing, and “began to ramp up his activity level in August, working out in California” with his knee responding well. “There were no indications that another surgery would be needed,” added the Heavy editor.

“It was only recently that some swelling and pain began to return to Williams’ knee, making the surgery necessary,” suggested Deveney.

While any extended absence beyond a week or two past the projected return date ought to be a legitimate source of concern, it seems probable that initial panic among some corners of Celtics fandom and analysts both may be more than is warranted.
