Are the red-hot Celtics title contenders?

After finishing .500 last season, the Boston Celtics were 25-25 on Jan. 29. This group of Celtics seemed stuck in mediocrity.

Since then, the Celtics are 20-3.

When you win 87 percent of your games over more than a quarter of the season, you have to wonder about the possibility of winning a championship. Or at least the Eastern Conference.

The Celtics will try to continue to move up the East standings when they face the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. The Jazz are 45-27 and still 5.5-point underdogs at BetMGM vs. a red-hot Celtics team.

Jayson Tatum, Boston’s unquestioned superstar, has been the biggest driver of the surge. He has been great the past few weeks. But others have been playing well too: Robert Williams has emerged as a solid rim protector, veteran Al Horford is scoring and rebounding up front and Marcus Smart is contributing in many ways. The Celtics have been among the best teams in the NBA on offense and defense over the past two months.

Boston looks like a contender and might end up in a pretty good playoff position too. The Celtics are percentage points behind the Philadelphia 76ers for the No. 3 spot in the East and a half-game behind the Milwaukee Bucks for the second spot. The Jazz are a very good team, and the spread on Wednesday night’s game shows oddsmakers have taken note of the Celtics and how well they have played of late. Perhaps the Celtics can keep this hot streak going deep into the spring.

Big night in the NBA

The Jazz-Celtics game is one of the marquee matchups of an 11-game NBA card. ESPN will have the Brooklyn Nets at the Memphis Grizzlies in another strong game, as Kyrie Irving plays for the first time since dropping 60 on the Orlando Magic. The Nets are a 2.5-point favorite.

The second game of the ESPN doubleheader is the 76ers against the Los Angeles Lakers, who are actually coming off a win. The 76ers are 8.5-point road favorites, which shows how much the oddsmakers have adjusted to the Lakers’ consistent losing. It’s still hard to take the Lakers, even getting all those points.

What else is on the schedule?

WGC Match Play golf starts on Wednesday, for those looking for some golf action. Jon Rahm is the favorite at +1400.

There are four NHL games including a TNT doubleheader featuring Penguins-Sabres and Blackhawks-Ducks. There’s also spring training baseball if you miss that game and feel like betting on roulette.

What’s the best bet?

I’ll take the Grizzlies. I understand the upside of the Nets when Irving plays but Memphis has been very good all season, including a fine 24-10 mark at home. The Nets get way more publicity but the Grizzlies have been a very good team this season.
