The match is the brainchild of Jamie, who helped organise several ‘Battle of the Brits’ events during the pandemic which gave valuable practice to home players at times when the tours were suspended.

He wanted to look beyond the world of tennis for the team captains.

It is expected that the England skipper will also be someone from within the sports world with an interest in tennis who is not specifically qualified for the job.

McCoist will perform the role usually carried out by Leon Smith in the Davis Cup.

Smith, a Scot, would not have wanted to take sides for a match likely to be hotly contested.

The England team will be made up of Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.
