Initial medical checks show that Alexander Zverev tore ‘several lateral ligaments’ in his right foot during his French Open semi-final with Rafael Nadal on Friday.
The German athlete posed in crutches on social media to inform fans of his horror injury, having just undergone an initial medical check which showed up multiple ligament tears.
Zverev, who tearfully left the court in a wheelchair at Roland Garros, posted on Instagram: ‘Hey guys! I am now on my way back home. Based on the first medical checks, it looks like I have torn several lateral ligaments in my right foot.’
‘I will be flying to Germany on Monday to make further examinations and to determine the best and quickest way for me to recover.’

The world number three, who was targeting his first ever French Open championship, went over on his ankle in his semi-final against Nadal while trying to hit a forehand from the corner of Court Philippe Chatrier.

Zverev was subsequently forced to retire and the Spanish veteran – a 13-time winner in Paris – advanced by default to book a place in Sunday’s final against Casper Ruud.
After the match, the 25-year-old posted a video message on Twitter to describe the injury as ‘very serious’.
He said during the message on Friday: ‘A very difficult moment for me today on the court.
‘It looks like I have a very serious injury. But the medical team and the doctors are still checking on it.’
