Bryson DeChambeau withdrew before the start of the second round of the Saudi International on Friday, citing the same left wrist and hip injuries that have bothered him since the start of the new season.

Quite why a man would fly so far from his Texas home when injured is a question only DeChambeau can answer, but it is important now he forgets all about his manic work ethic, lucrative appearance fees and the nine-figure offer to join the Saudi Golf League, and focuses on getting healthy.

Wrist injuries are among any golfer’s worst fears, so imagine what it is like for a man who never stops working out or hitting golf balls at ferocious speed.

DeChambeau was clearly hampered by the problems at the season opener in Hawaii last month, where he finished tied 25th in a 38-man field, and promptly withdrew from the Sony Open the following week.

Eight days ago, he missed the halfway cut in the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego, wincing on numerous occasions.

Clearly there was something happening in Saudi Arabia that necessitated him embarking on a plainly unwise 12-hour flight.

DeChambeau’s scheduled playing partner Tommy Fleetwood shot a fine 67 in windy conditions to be just three shots off the halfway lead held by Adri Arnaus and Harold Varner. It has been an impressive response from Fleetwood after a poor final round in Dubai last week cost him the chance of a first win in more than two years.

An hour’s flight away at the Ras al Khaimah Championship on the DP World Tour, Scot David Law shot a 64 to lead the field by two shots.
