Robert Williams made his long-awaited return to the TD Garden parquet on Friday night, and Boston Celtics fans reacted appropriately.

Williams received a huge standing ovation as he checked into the game in the first quarter. The Celtics big man hadn’t played since the NBA Finals due to his knee surgery in September.

It didn’t take long for Williams to give C’s fans a taste of what they’ve been missing. Shortly after entering the game, he threw down his first of what will be many alley-oops this season if he can stay healthy.

Williams averaged 10.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks through 61 games played last season. All were career-highs.

The Celtics defense, which has taken a step back so far in the 2022-23 campaign, should get a significant boost with Williams back in the mix. The 25-year-old was an NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection last season.
